The CA 19-9 test measures the level of Cancer Antigen 19-9, a carbohydrate antigen that is associated with certain types of cancers, particularly pancreatic cancer. CA 19-9 is a tumor marker that is normally found in small amounts in healthy adults but can be significantly elevated in certain cancers.
This test is most commonly used to monitor pancreatic cancer treatment and detect recurrence. It can also be elevated in colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, bile duct cancer, and liver cancer. Non-cancerous conditions such as pancreatitis, gallstones, liver disease, and inflammatory bowel disease may also cause mild elevations in CA 19-9 levels.
