What is Electrolytes (Na,K,CI,CO2) test?

An Electrolytes test measures the levels of key electrolytes in the blood — Sodium (Na), Potassium (K), Chloride (Cl), and Bicarbonate/CO2. Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals that play a critical role in maintaining fluid balance, regulating nerve and muscle function, balancing the body’s acid-base (pH) levels, and supporting heart rhythm and hydration.

Sodium (Na) regulates fluid balance and blood pressure. Potassium (K) is essential for heart and muscle function. Chloride (Cl) helps maintain fluid balance and acid-base equilibrium. Bicarbonate (CO2) reflects the body’s ability to maintain proper pH levels.

This panel is commonly ordered to evaluate overall metabolic health, monitor patients with kidney disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes, and assess the effects of medications such as diuretics or ACE inhibitors.
