An Estradiol test measures the level of estradiol (E2) in the blood. Estradiol is the most potent and predominant form of estrogen, a female sex hormone primarily produced by the ovaries. It is also produced in smaller amounts by the adrenal glands and, in men, by the testes.
This test is commonly used to evaluate ovarian function, assess fertility, and monitor assisted reproductive treatments such as IVF. It helps diagnose conditions such as early or delayed puberty, irregular menstrual cycles, menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and ovarian tumors. In men, elevated estradiol levels may indicate gynecomastia (breast tissue growth) or testicular tumors. It is also used to monitor hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in both men and women.
