A Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) test measures the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood after a period of fasting. Glucose is the body’s primary source of energy, and its levels are regulated by the hormone insulin, which is produced by the pancreas. When the body cannot produce or properly use insulin, blood sugar levels become abnormally high or low.
This test is one of the most commonly used tests to screen for, diagnose, and monitor diabetes mellitus (Type 1 and Type 2) and prediabetes. It is also used to evaluate hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and to monitor blood sugar control in patients already diagnosed with diabetes. A fasting state ensures that the results are not influenced by recent food intake, providing a more accurate baseline measurement.
