The Anti-HCV test detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis C is a viral infection that primarily affects the liver and can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer if left untreated.
This test is used as the initial screening test for Hepatitis C infection. A positive (reactive) result indicates exposure to HCV at some point, but it does not distinguish between an active current infection and a past infection that has resolved. A positive Anti-HCV result is typically followed by an HCV RNA (PCR) test to confirm whether the virus is still present in the body.
