What is Hepatitis A IgM + IgG test?

The Hepatitis A IgM + IgG test detects both types of antibodies produced in response to the Hepatitis A virus (HAV). IgM antibodies appear early in the infection and indicate a recent or acute Hepatitis A infection, while IgG antibodies develop later and remain in the blood long-term, indicating past infection or immunity following vaccination.

This combined test is used to determine whether a person has a current (acute) Hepatitis A infection or has previously been exposed to the virus and developed long-term immunity. It is commonly ordered when a person presents with symptoms of hepatitis such as jaundice, fatigue, nausea, or abdominal pain, or when there has been a potential exposure to HAV through contaminated food or water. It also helps confirm vaccination-induced immunity.
