What is HIV (ANTI HIV) test?

The Anti-HIV test detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system, specifically CD4+ T cells, and if untreated, can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

This test is used to screen for HIV infection. Modern HIV tests are often combination (4th generation) tests that detect both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen, allowing earlier detection of infection. A reactive (positive) result requires confirmatory testing with a more specific test such as a Western blot or HIV-1/HIV-2 differentiation assay. The test is recommended for all adults as part of routine health screening, and particularly for individuals at higher risk such as those with multiple sexual partners, intravenous drug users, and healthcare workers with potential exposure.
