The Blood Grouping and Rh Factor test determines a person’s ABO blood type (A, B, AB, or O) and Rh factor status (positive or negative). Blood type is determined by the presence or absence of specific antigens (proteins) on the surface of red blood cells. The Rh factor refers to the presence (Rh+) or absence (Rh−) of the RhD antigen.
This test is essential before blood transfusions to ensure compatibility and prevent life-threatening transfusion reactions. It is routinely performed during pregnancy to identify Rh incompatibility between the mother and fetus, which can cause hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN). It is also required before organ or bone marrow transplantation and is an important part of pre-surgical preparation.
