What is Syphilis Anti-TP test?

The Syphilis Anti-TP (Anti-Treponema pallidum) test is a specific treponemal antibody test used to confirm syphilis infection. Unlike the RPR test, which detects non-specific reagin antibodies, the Anti-TP test detects antibodies that are specifically directed against proteins of the Treponema pallidum bacteria, making it highly specific for syphilis.

This test is used as a confirmatory test following a positive RPR screening result. Once a person has been infected with syphilis, treponemal antibodies typically remain detectable for life, even after successful treatment, which means a positive Anti-TP test alone cannot distinguish between active, treated, or past infection. It is therefore interpreted in conjunction with the RPR test and clinical history. It is also used as part of routine prenatal screening and in individuals at high risk for STIs.
