The Syphilis RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) test is a non-treponemal screening blood test used to detect syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Rather than detecting antibodies specific to the syphilis bacteria, the RPR test detects non-specific antibodies (reagins) produced by the immune system in response to cellular damage caused by the infection.
This test is widely used as a screening tool for syphilis due to its simplicity and low cost. A positive RPR result requires confirmation with a more specific treponemal test (such as Anti-TP or TPHA). The RPR test is also useful for monitoring treatment response — antibody levels should decline after successful treatment. It is recommended for pregnant women, individuals with multiple sexual partners, and anyone at risk of STIs.
