A Testosterone test measures the level of testosterone in the blood. Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone (androgen), produced mainly by the testes in men and in smaller amounts by the ovaries and adrenal glands in women. It plays a critical role in the development of male reproductive tissues, secondary sexual characteristics, muscle mass, bone density, and red blood cell production.
This test is used to evaluate testosterone levels in men experiencing symptoms of low testosterone such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, depression, reduced muscle mass, and infertility. In women, it is used to investigate symptoms of excess androgen such as irregular periods, acne, excessive hair growth (hirsutism), or PCOS. It is also used to monitor hormone replacement therapy and to diagnose conditions such as hypogonadism, adrenal tumors, or early puberty.
