The Total Cholesterol test measures the overall amount of cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol is a fatty, wax-like substance found in every cell of the body and is essential for producing hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help digest food. It is carried through the bloodstream attached to proteins called lipoproteins, primarily LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol), and VLDL.
This test is used as a broad initial assessment of cardiovascular risk. High total cholesterol levels are associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke. It is typically ordered as part of a complete lipid panel alongside LDL, HDL, and triglycerides.
