What is Urine Microalbumin test?

The Urine Microalbumin test measures very small amounts of albumin (a protein) in the urine that are not detectable by a standard urinalysis. Normally, the kidneys filter the blood and prevent albumin from passing into the urine. The presence of microalbumin in the urine (microalbuminuria) is an early sign of kidney damage, particularly in patients with diabetes or high blood pressure.

This test is primarily used to detect early diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease caused by diabetes) before significant kidney damage occurs, allowing for timely intervention. It is also used to monitor patients with hypertension, heart disease, or chronic kidney disease. Early detection of microalbuminuria allows for treatment adjustments that can slow or prevent the progression of kidney disease. The test may be performed on a random urine sample, a first-morning sample, or a 24-hour urine collection depending on clinical requirements.
