A Urine Pregnancy Test (UPT) detects the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced by the placenta shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining. hCG levels rise rapidly in early pregnancy and can be detected in urine as early as 10 to 14 days after conception.
This test is used to confirm or rule out pregnancy. It is one of the most commonly performed and readily available diagnostic tests. It is used in clinical settings to confirm pregnancy before initiating antenatal care, prior to prescribing medications that may be harmful during pregnancy, before certain medical procedures or surgeries, and in emergency situations to rule out ectopic pregnancy. A positive result indicates the presence of hCG and is a strong indicator of pregnancy, though further confirmation with a blood hCG test or ultrasound may be recommended.
