What is Varicella IgG test?

The Varicella IgG Antibody test measures the level of IgG antibodies against the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV), the virus responsible for chickenpox (varicella) and shingles (herpes zoster). IgG antibodies are long-lasting and develop after a varicella infection or vaccination, serving as markers of immunity to the virus.

This test is used to determine whether a person has immunity to varicella — either from a previous chickenpox infection or from the varicella vaccine. It is commonly performed for healthcare workers, pregnant women, and individuals in close contact with immunocompromised patients, to confirm their immune status. A positive IgG result indicates immunity and protection against chickenpox. A negative result suggests susceptibility and may indicate the need for vaccination. During pregnancy, varicella infection can cause serious complications for both the mother and the unborn baby, making immunity screening particularly important.
