What is CPK Test?

The CPK (Creatine Phosphokinase) test, also known as the CK (Creatine Kinase) test, is a blood test that measures the level of creatine phosphokinase, an enzyme found mainly in the heart, brain, and skeletal muscles. This enzyme helps produce energy needed for muscle movement and normal cellular function. When muscle tissue, heart muscle, or certain organs are damaged, CPK levels in the blood may rise significantly.

This test is commonly recommended when a person experiences muscle pain, weakness, chest pain, muscle injury, difficulty moving, or when a doctor suspects muscle damage or heart-related conditions. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions such as muscle injury, muscular dystrophy, heart attack, myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle), rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown), and certain neurological disorders. The CPK test is widely used to evaluate muscle and heart health, detect tissue damage, and help doctors determine appropriate treatment when abnormal enzyme levels are detected.
