What is TIBC Test?

The TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity) test is a blood test that measures the blood’s ability to bind and transport iron through a protein called transferrin. Transferrin carries iron throughout the body and delivers it where it is needed for important functions such as red blood cell production and oxygen transport. The TIBC test helps evaluate how effectively iron is being carried in the bloodstream and provides important information about the body’s overall iron balance.

This test is commonly recommended when a person experiences symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, dizziness, pale skin, shortness of breath, or when a doctor suspects iron deficiency or other blood-related disorders. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions such as iron deficiency anemia, chronic anemia, nutritional deficiencies, iron overload disorders, liver disease, and conditions affecting iron metabolism. The TIBC test is often performed along with Serum Iron, Ferritin, and other iron studies to provide a complete assessment of iron status and help doctors determine appropriate treatment when abnormal iron levels are detected.
