What is Mumps IgG test?

The Mumps IgG Antibody test measures the level of IgG antibodies against the Mumps virus in the blood. IgG antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to mumps infection or vaccination and provide long-term immunity against the virus. Mumps is a contagious viral infection primarily affecting the parotid (salivary) glands, causing painful swelling of the cheeks and jaw.

This test is used to determine whether a person has immunity to mumps — either from prior infection or from the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine. It is commonly ordered for healthcare workers, students, and individuals in outbreak-prone settings to verify immunity status. It can also be used to support the diagnosis of a current mumps infection when paired with an IgM test. A positive IgG result indicates immunity, while a negative result may indicate susceptibility and the need for vaccination.
