What is Rubella IgM Test?

The Rubella IgM test is a blood test used to detect Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies produced by the body in response to a recent or active infection caused by the rubella virus, also known as German measles. Rubella is a contagious viral infection that can cause fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and other flu-like symptoms. Detecting IgM antibodies helps determine whether a person has a recent or current rubella infection.

This test is commonly recommended when a person shows symptoms such as rash, fever, swollen glands, joint pain, or when a doctor suspects a recent rubella infection. It is especially important during pregnancy, as rubella infection can cause serious complications for the developing baby, including congenital rubella syndrome. The Rubella IgM test helps diagnose recent infection, assess immunity status when needed, and support early medical intervention or monitoring to prevent complications associated with rubella infection.
