What is CO₂ (Carbon Dioxide) Test?

The CO₂ (Carbon Dioxide) test is a blood test that measures the level of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream, mainly in the form of bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻). Carbon dioxide plays an important role in maintaining the body’s acid-base balance (pH), supporting normal breathing function, and ensuring proper metabolic activity. The test helps evaluate how well the lungs and kidneys are working together to regulate the body’s chemical balance.

This test is commonly recommended when a person experiences symptoms such as breathing difficulty, fatigue, weakness, confusion, prolonged vomiting, dehydration, or suspected electrolyte imbalance. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions such as kidney disease, lung disorders, metabolic acidosis or alkalosis, severe infections, dehydration, and other conditions affecting the body’s acid-base balance. The CO₂ test is often included as part of an electrolyte panel or routine health check-up to assess overall health and help doctors guide appropriate treatment when abnormal levels are detected.
